Healthy Halloween Candy
Trick or Treat? A calorie comparison of popular candies.
Halloween candy made its annual appearance in stores nationwide this past summer. Americans started thinking about the Fall season and Halloween. I even wore more orange clothes after spotting my first bag of Halloween candy.
In fact, you can’t go into a store right now without running into a giant bag of Halloween candy not to mention the bakeries and supermarkets taunting the orange frosted pumpkin cookies and cupcakes with white ghost icing.
How can one resist…its Halloween and it only comes once a year right? The not so spooky news is that you and your family can enjoy Halloween and all its candy without going into sugar shock.
Here are how some Halloween candies rate:
Go for the best full-size candy bar. York Peppermint Pattie weighing in at only 140 calories and 2.5 grams of fat. Flaunting a light and airy filling plus an intense mint and dark-chocolate flavor it will definitely satisfy a scary appetite plus leave you with minty fresh breath. Bonus, the light and airy filling means fewer calories.
Craving something fluffy, sweet, and low calorie? Not another Peep.
Peeps Pumpkins weigh in at only 16 calories and 0 grams of fat. Six of these little peeps still come in under 100 calories. That’s nothing to boo about!
You can always have a handful of candy corn (about 10 pieces) for 64 calories and 0 grams of fat.
Just one small tootsie roll contains 50 calories and 1 gram of fat. This old favorite serves up a chewy, chocolate fix. Just make sure you eat them in moderation! Looking for some fun?
The "fun-sized" pouch of Peanut M&M’s only contains 90 calories and 5 grams of fat. The peanuts provide protein which acts like a stabilizer to your blood sugar when you get a spike from eating the sugar-laden candy. Plus the portion control pouch helps those trying not to go up a Halloween costume size.
Charms Blow Pops contain 60 calories and 0 grams of fat. An added bonus: it contains gum which is a charming deal that promises to keep your mouth away from other higher calorie foods for at least a little bit anyway.
No matter what Halloween treats you decide to play trick-or-treat with this year make sure you do so in moderation. Happy Halloween!
