Philly Television Legend Dies
She passed away two days after a landmark birthday and a career spent entertaining generations of kids.
Philadelphia television legend Sally Starr passed away Sunday at a nursing home in New Jersey, according to numerous published reports.
Starr died Sunday, just two days after her 90th birthday.
Starr hosted a cartoon show on WFIL-TV/Channel 6 (now WPVI/6ABC).
According to an obituary posted on the station's website Starr was
"born Alleen Mae Beller in 1923, she had her name legally changed to Sally Starr in 1941.
Affectionately known to fans as "Our Gal Sal," she began her decades-long career as a disc jockey in 1948. She became host of "Popeye Theater" two years later on the former WFIL-TV, now WPVI."
Starr was inducted into the Philadelphia Broadcast Pioneers Hall of Fame. The organization's website posted a long tribute to Starr with photographs chronicling her broadcast career that began when she was just 12 years old.
Services for "Our Gal Sal" will be private, according to the 6ABC obituary.

Two years ago Sally came to our office at Booths Corner Farmers market for a meet and greet and what a treasure we did have as she met with all of her fans, refusing to leave until the very last ones could speak with her and have pictures take. She is a class act, and will be sorely missed by ourselves, and her fans. We loved having her and her friendship was something we will always remember. They dont make them like her anymore. As a young girl Sally Starr & Popeye theater were a staple of my day. I couldn't wait for her show to come on. I even had a costume like hers. She was an icon. I know she is in heaven entertaining her fans.

a few years back i attended a united cerebral palsy radiothon at the alpine inn on baltimore pike. Ms. Sally Starr was in attendance, doing some speaking on the radio and being her usual charming self. when it came to eats, i volunteered to hop over to the local mc donald's for some quick junk food. and that is how i took Sally Starr to dinner ! ! a sad day, indeed.........
