Police Blotter: Suspected Cocaine Found

Lawn Light Vandalized

A resident of the 500 block of W. Woodland Avenue reported March 19 at 12:23 p.m. that sometime during the night someone knocked over the light post at the end of his driveway.

Car Plate Stolen

A resident from the 100 block of Hart Lane reported March 19 at 2:55 p.m. that sometime during the night someone stole the registration plate from her vehicle while it was parked in the driveway of the home.

Bike Stolen

A resident from the 300 block of Sunnybrook Road reported March 19 at 4:55 p.m. that sometime during the night someone stole his red-colored Schwinn BMX boy’s bike from the front lawn of the home. The bike is valued at $150.

Suspected Cocaine Found In Vehicle

While on patrol in the area of the in the 300 block of Baltimore Pike March 20 at 2:44 a.m., Sgt. David Welsh observed a male acting in a suspicious manner in the parking lot. Sgt. Welsh followed the actor into the store and then observed another male and a female acting suspiciously in the store. The officer followed the actors out of the store and observed them enter a vehicle in the parking lot. The actors continued to act in a suspicious manner as other officers arrived on the scene. The actors were asked for identification and a pill bottle was observed in a rear seat pocket of the vehicle. The vehicle was searched and a large quantity of pills, as well as suspected cocaine, were located. Newon Nhaway, 18, of the 500 block of Sycamore Avenue in Clifton Heights, was taken into custody and transported to the Springfield Police Station. She was charged with violations of the Health and Safety Act. The other two occupants of the vehicle were identified and released at the scene. The incident is under investigation by Detective Bridget McCarthy.

Golf Ball Hits Home

A resident from the 1500 block of Country Club Drive reported March 21 at 8:35 a.m. that sometime over the last day someone hit/threw a golf ball through the front window of his home.

Woman Charged with Retail Theft

security in the 800 block of Baltimore Pike reported March 22 at 3:38 p.m. that they had a female in custody for retail theft at the store. Patrolman Daniel Boyd responded and took Ernestine Williams, 42, of the 6100 block of Master Street in Philadelphia into custody and transported her to the Springfield Police Station. She was charged with retail theft for allegedly taking $793 worth of merchandise from the store. Detective Bridget McCarthy is handling the investigation.

Minor Cited for Retail Theft

The store in the reported March 22 at 8:23 p.m. that they had a young male in custody for retail theft at the store. Patrolman Andrew Graff responded and took a 17-year-old juvenile from Bryn Mawr into custody. He was issued a citation for retail theft for allegedly taking $12.99 worth of merchandise from the store. He was later released to a relative after being issued the citation. The incident is under investigation by Detective Bridget McCarthy.

Cash Stolen from Home

A resident from the 400 block of Alliston Road reported March 23 at 7:16 a.m. that sometime during the night someone forcibly entered the basement of the home and stole a quantity of cash. A window was broken and a screen was cut out to gain entry. The cash was located under the cushion of a sofa in the basement. The incident is under investigation by Detective Robert Nutley.

Sneakers Run Off

The store in the 1100 block of Baltimore Pike reported March 23 at 11:15 a.m. that a black female left the store without paying for three pairs of shoes. She entered a vehicle and fled the lot onto Baltimore Pike. The area was checked but the actor and vehicle were gone. The shoes are valued more than $125.

Lots of Loot Lost

A Springfield resident reported March 23 at 3:35 p.m. that he exited a photo booth at the Springfield Mall and later discovered that he had left his wallet. He notified mall security personnel, who located the wallet in the booth. The victim checked the wallet and discovered a large quantity of cash, more than $1,000, had been stolen.

DUI, Possession Charges Follow Accident

Springfield Police responded to S. Bishop Ave. & E. Springfield Road for a reported traffic accident March 24 at 12:32 p.m. Officers arrived to find a two-vehicle accident with one minor injury. Further investigation showed that one of the operators, Eileen Doherty, 51, of the 600 block of Childs Avenue in Drexel Hill, was allegedly under the influence of suspected narcotics. She was transported to Springfield Hospital to be treated for her injuries. While searching her vehicle, Sgt. Raymond Purcell located numerous pills, a quantity of suspected marijuana, and drug paraphernalia. She was charged with driving under the influence of a controlled substance, violations of the Health and Safety Act and various motor vehicle violations. The incident is under investigation by Detective Bridget McCarthy. She was later released to a relative.

Merchandise Taken from Store Display

The store in the Springfield Mall reported March 24 at 4:12 p.m. that sometime between 3:30 p.m. and the time of the report someone stole 24 pairs of shorts and six dresses from a display in the front of the store. The items are valued more than $1,000.

Vehicle Tires Popped

A resident from the 400 block of Maplewood Road reported March 25 at 10:56 a.m. that sometime during the night someone punctured both tires on the driver’s side of the vehicle while it was parked in the street in front of the home.

Vehicles Spray-Painted

Two residents from the 100 and 200 block of School Lane reported March 25 at 10:58 a.m. that sometime during the night someone used red spray-paint on the driver’s sides of the vehicles while they were parked on the street in front of the homes.

Credit Card Stolen, Charged

On March 25 at 12:03 p.m. a Swarthmore resident reported that on March 24 she was eating lunch with a friend at in the 1000 block of Baltimore Pike. She was later contacted by her credit card company at 7 p.m. and told that there was unusual activity on her card at local stores. She discovered that her credit card had been taken from her pocketbook while she was eating lunch. The incident is under investigation by Detective Bridget McCarthy.
