Going to Extremes for Extreme Deals

The early bird gets the worm.. and the big screen TV for cheap.

If you're reading this after 6 a.m. (which you are) you've missed the door buster deals that 'em lining up at the doors long before Thursday night.

At Best Buy on Baltimore Pike in Springfield, the first tent went up Wednesday morning at 4. Inside the canvas cottage a rotating band of bargain seekers, including Theresa Bagley of Wallingford who set up the tent, went to work in Media on Wednesday and then came back for the duration. She had help in the form of a rotating group of friends who sustained themselves inside the big white tent with propane-fired heating fans, blankets chairs and stories of retail victories past.

By 6 p.m. Thanksgiving Night the line at Best Buy had swelled to about 35 people, with six hours to go before the doors officially opened.

Down the street about a mile at the Target on Baltimore Pike a band of seven bargain warriors was already in line by 6 p.m.. Michael Williams of Collingdale was the first in line at 1 p.m.. Williams told Patch he was planning to have Thanksgiving dinner after purchasing a Westinghouse 50" TV' ($349).

Everyone was in line for a TV except the seventh guy. He was in line for an X-Box game system.

At the Target Store in Springfield Mall, the line was only four deep just before 6p.m. on Thanksgiving night. Kathleen Martin of Drexel Hill was first in line. She arrived early in the afternoon to stake her claim on 32" TV. 

By 6:15 the line at the Springfield Mall Target was starting to grow and the Target store staff had arrived to place trash and recycling boxes along the line which extended the length of the building from the lower entrance out to nearly the loading dock.

Roseann Powers is in charge of the store's security. This was her fourth year at this Target store She said they were expecting about 1,500 people to fill the line by the time the store opened at 9.
