New Springfield GIANT Brings Change

What's in store for customers and employees of this former Genuardi's location?

The former Genuardi's at 950 Baltimore Pike in Springfield has officially begun its first week as a GIANT Food Store.

Assistant store manager, Josh Pinchok, said the new GIANT store has undergone "tremendous changes in only one week." Pictures of the produce department during the renovation and after really highlight these changes.  (shown left)

According to Store Manager, Steve Coffey, all former Genuardi's employees retained there positions and the store is still hiring.

"The food industry is a fun, fast paced business and we are always looking to recruit qualified, energetic people," said Coffey.

Giant is currently the third largest private sector employer in Pennsylvania with more than 26,000 full and part-time associates in the state.

The expanded cafe area offers sandwiches, pizza, sushi, bakery, and deli with a dining area. An employee at the pizza counter pointed out that the dough is made fresh each day, on-site. The mammoth, "boardwalk" style slices really are comparable to a pizzaria.

Customer Reaction

A local shopper, said she loves the store for its patient, helpful staff and great prices. Another customer, Ruth, said the new organization of the store will take some getting used to, but she's happy to see the store remain open. "The change was made smoothly," said Janice, an employee for 19 years.

The GIANT supermarket chain, headquartered in Calisle, PA, opened five new area stores this week in former Genuardi's locations.

Gee - 2 Giant's in Springfield! I'm a bit surprised that they would want the Genuardi's location when the Sproul Rd store has better access and parking.

I am asking a favor of our new Giant store manager, Steve Coffey, but first let me say that I am very pleased with the quality of the food and the pleasant atmosphere since the acquisition of my old favorite, Genuardi's. Would you be able to order a replacement coffee carafe, #GL210, 10 cup from the medelcoinc.com company for a loyal customer? You have 2 in stock that are12 cup capacity. I saw them there yesterday, and wondered if you could order one or two replacement carafes for me. My email address is geomccar@aol.com, and I live two blocks from your store. Keep up the good work!!!

Dont you have to bake these things at 400+ in the oven before serving? Won't that sterilize theRead More food?

With all due respect to Giant (I shop there), I do believe that seed and suet for backyard birdsRead More should be purchased by a locally owned store. A locally run store has a higher turnaround in seed and suet, meaning the product is fresher. Stay away from "big box" discount stores. Their seed and suet may sit on store shelves for months, letting the products turn rancid. Also, big box stores often by seed mixtures that contain fillers such as red millet. Backyard birds do not eat red millet (they do love white millet, however). If you think you're saving money when you buy a seed mixture containing red millet, it's really not a bargain. Shop locally! And be a smart shopper!

The Davis Feed Mill in Perkasie and the Moyer Feed Mill in Souderton are good sources for bird seed.Read More Locally owned and operated. Support your community business.

Dove's eat red millet. Your right about red millet in most seed bags which are over half the seeds,Read More what a waste. We buy big bags of parrot seeds & they to are filled with filler things that they don't even eat. I don't like the fact that the seed bags can't be seen through anymore. Easy way to rip people off.

Get you lox/nova from Costco. It's almost half the price and much tastier and if they ever have aRead More recall, they notify you, individually, and you don't need a receipt to get cash back. Once I discovered how good their smoked salmon tastes, and I get it at such a great price, I never will get it from anywhere else. One catch... you have to join the Costco club but man, it's worth it. I used to buy 1/2 lbs from Genardi's and when they got bought out by Giant, I had to look elsewhere. Now that I found Costco, I buy 1 1/2 lbs at about the same price and it's even more delicious. Happy Bar Mitzvah.
