A locally run store has a higher turnaround in seed and suet, meaning the product is fresher. Stay away from "big box" discount stores. Their seed and suet may sit on store shelves for months, letting the products turn rancid. Also, big box stores often by seed mixtures that contain fillers such as red millet. Backyard birds do not eat red millet (they do love white millet, however). If you think you're saving money when you buy a seed mixture containing red millet, it's really not a bargain. Shop locally! And be a smart shopper!

We buy big bags of parrot seeds & they to are filled with filler things that they don't even eat. I don't like the fact that the seed bags can't be seen through anymore. Easy way to rip people off.

Get you lox/nova from Costco. It's almost half the price and much tastier and if they ever have a…Read More recall, they notify you, individually, and you don't need a receipt to get cash back. Once I discovered how good their smoked salmon tastes, and I get it at such a great price, I never will get it from anywhere else. One catch... you have to join the Costco club but man, it's worth it. I used to buy 1/2 lbs from Genardi's and when they got bought out by Giant, I had to look elsewhere. Now that I found Costco, I buy 1 1/2 lbs at about the same price and it's even more delicious. Happy Bar Mitzvah.
