Two People Found Hiding in Vacant Home

A ladder was found leaning up against a second floor open window at the vacant home in Springfield.

The following information was supplied by the Springfield Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

A relative of a homeowner from the 400 block of Glendale Circle reported at about 8:05 p.m. on Thanksgiving (Nov. 22) that someone may be in the home without permission while it was vacant.

Officers arrived to find a ladder leaning up against a second floor open window at the vacant home. The relative arrived with a key to the home and allowed officers to enter.

When the officers went inside they found the home in disarray.

The house was searched and a man was found hiding in a living room closet and a second person was found hiding in a crawl space to the attic.

Matthew Bennett, 20, and a 17-year-old, both of Springfield, were taken into custody and transported to the Springfield Police Station.

The two were charged with burglary, criminal trespass, defiant trespass and disorderly conduct.

The juvenile will be petitioned to Juvenile Court in Media on the charges.

Detective Daniel McNeely is handling the investigation.
