House Burglarized in 'Home Maintenance' Scam

Springfield police report a brazen thief got away with jewelry and cash.

 

The following information was supplied by the Springfield Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Burglary—Locust Road at about 10:15 a.m. on Sept. 26. A resident reported that a white man knocked on his door and stated that he had to trim some  trees in the rear yard due to his neighbor putting up a fence. The resident and the man walked to the rear yard and stayed for about 15 minutes, according to police. The man then told the victim he had to go to his truck to get him a brochure for the work to be done. After a short time the victim walked to the front of the home and the man and the van he was driving were gone. The van had been parked in the driveway.

The victim checked the house and found that the bedrooms on the second floor were gone through and jewelry was missing, according to police. The victim also reported that an envelope with cash was stolen from a server on the first floor. The victim checked with his neighbor and discovered that no fence was being installed. There was no description of a second person involved in the incident. The area was checked but the persons and vehicle were gone. The incident is under investigation by Detective Bridget McCarthy.
