Employees ID Alleged Meat Thief After Fishy Exchange

A man allegedly stole meats and returned them to the tune of $290.

Springfield police received a report from the Jan. 19 at 3:57 p.m. that a black male entered the store and returned what was reported to be spoiled seafood and meats in exchange for cash back.

The male received his money and left the store.

Further investigation showed that the man had actually stolen the items from the store earlier and brought them to the exchange counter. The incident is under investigation by Detective Daniel McNeely. The items were valued at $290.82.

UPDATE: On Jan. 20 at 4:30 p.m. the alleged thief was observed by Giant employees in the parking lot near Bogart’s Bar & Grill in the 700 block of W. Sproul Road.

Patrolman Daniel Boyd arrived and was told that the man was inside of the bar. The suspect exited the bar and was identified by store employees as the man involved in the theft on Jan. 19. He was taken into custody and transported to the Springfield Police Station.

Winfred Fort, 60, of Bristol Street in New London, Ct. was charged with Retail Theft and Receiving Stolen Property.
