Foot Chase at Mall Ends in Two Arrests

Springfield Mall security and Springfield Police chase down two people inside and then outside the shopping center.

 

Two Philadelphia residents face a series of charges following a foot chase that police say started in the mall and eventually ended up with one of them trying to climb out the window of a car in the parking lot.

At 4:21 p.m. Sunday, Springfield Police were called to the Zumi Store in the Springfield Mall for a retail theft that just occurred. The thieves were still inside the mall.

When the first Springfield Police officer arrived, he saw mall security running after two people inside the mall. After a brief foot chase, police spotted the two they were after, a 27-year-old man and a 41-year-old woman from Philadelphia, getting into a vehicle in the parking lot.

Police say the two ignored orders to stop and the first police officer caught up to them and tried to remove the man and woman from the car. According police, they "were attempting to flee with the officer partially in the vehicle attempting to remove the keys to the vehicle."

A police sergeant arrived and was able to stop and then arrest the woman as she tried to run away.  Police say the man "climbed out a window of the vehicle and began to flee on foot where he was eventually subdued" by other officers who had arrived on the scene.

Police say they found stolen merchandise inside the car.

The two were charged with:

  • Retail Theft for taking $315.35 worth of merchandise from the store
  • Receiving Stolen Property
  • Possession Instruments Of Crime
  • Criminal Conspiracy
  • Recklessly Endangering Another Person
  • Resisting Arrest

No one was injured during the incident, according to police.
