The Photographer's Point Of View

Tips for better photography

Point of view can make or break a photograph. The position the photographer takes to shoot the subject is an important variable in making good photographs. The simple fact is that some things look better from one point of view rather than another.

Whenever possible, a good photographer will shoot a subject from several points of view to assure that the subject is shown in the best way possible. The best way means that the prominent accents and features of the subject are shown in the best way possible.

One of my professional photographic specialties is real estate photography. I have to capture the essence of the house in images that prospective buyers will see on the Internet and sometimes in brochures or ads.

When I shoot real estate, I am continually challenged to find the best point of view of any interior or exterior scene. No one wants to look at numerous photographs of a room. They want to see the essence of the room in one photograph. That is most often a challenge that takes some experimentation to get it right. The importance of point of view is not limited to architectural type photography. It is true of portraits, still life, scenics, and all photographs when the photographer has the luxury of picking a point of view.

The gallery contains photographs I shot of one room in a house for recently for sale. The room was clearly the centerpiece of the home. My job was to find the best point of view to show off the attributes of the room.  The photos show the room from seven points of view. You can decide which one speaks most clearly about the room.
