$41k in Scholarships, Awards for Graduating Seniors

The Springfield Area Educational Foundation (SAEF) is pleased to announce $41,350 in scholarships and awards will go to the 2012 graduating class of Springfield High School.

More than 40 scholarships and awards await graduating seniors who have distinguished themselves in art, business, mathematics, music, special education classes, technology, community service and overall academic achievement. These scholarships and awards will be presented at during the Honors Reception on May 30 and commencement on June 8. 

"Our school has a superb tradition of recognizing and assisting our high achieving students," Springfield High School said. "A very large part of that tradition are the many scholarships that have been established by individuals, families and organizations with strong ties to our community."

"The Springfield Area Educational Foundation (SAEF) board works hard to support the tradition of honoring excellence in our high school seniors," SAEF co-founder and former school board president, Stanley Johnson said. "Throughout the year SAEF solicits alumni donations and runs fundraising events such as our June golf outings at . By carefully investing and managing scholarship funds, we are able to grow the endowments and maintain longstanding and prestigious scholarships -even when the original family bequests have been depleted."

The scholarships and awards derive from alumni donations; bequests from families who wish to honor loved ones, living or dead; teachers; SAEF; and the generosity of individuals in the community who either add to existing scholarship funds, or seek to establish new scholarships that benefit graduates in the Springfield and Morton communities.

Braunsdorf-Springfield Area Educational Foundation Scholarship (Commencement Award)-$5,000 Qualifications:  Student who has earned the respect of his or her classmates to an unusual degree through concern for others, participation in activities, and academic achievement.
 
The Glen Brunner Scholarship - $1,000
To honor the memory of Mr. Glen Brunner who was a dedicated, compassionate and enthusiastic elementary school teacher from . Qualifications: It will be awarded to a student who has been accepted to a college/university as an elementary education major (attach a copy of acceptance letter); demonstrates involvement and leadership in school and community & show commitment to teamwork.  Submit an essay describing personal goals for their choice of a career in elementary education (the student should note if they attended Sabold and had Mr. Brunner as a teacher); submit letters of recommendation from two faculty members.
 
Diane Ferrell Catlett Memorial Scholarship - $250
To honor the memory of Diane Ferrell Catlett who was a graduate of SHS and went on to become a civil engineer; she passed away at the age of 34. Qualifications: Academic achievement; enrolled in Honors or AP Classes; financial need.
 
Danny Curran III Memorial Scholarship Award- $1,000
To honor Daniel R. Curran III, a 1995 graduate of Springfield High School. Danny was a four-year member of the Cross Country, Winter Track, and Spring Track Teams.  In his senior year, he was Captain of all three teams, and he went out to be an athlete at Widener University. Danny was an amazing, adventurous spirit and he was good and kind and gentle. He had a smile that could light up a room and a sense of humor and caring that made people gravitate to him. Qualifications: Recipients will exemplify integrity as demonstrated by high moral principle, honesty and sincerity in the school and the community and a positive “can do” attitude about all that is put before them.
 
Jennifer Defeo Memorial Scholarship- $500
To honor the memory of Jennifer Defeo, a 2011 Springfield High School graduate who was enrolled as a chemistry major at Temple University. Jennifer was a driven and altruistic person and a high academic achiever excelled in a rigorous course load in both high school and college. Qualifications: student must be accepted to a college or university with plans to major in the sciences; student should have strong interest in chemistry and be a current AP Chemistry student.
 
Adelaide and Vincent Faralli Diversity in Art Award-$250
To honor the memory of Adelaide and Vincent Faralli, professors at Moore College of Art in Philadelphia and two outstanding members of the Springfield/Morton community. Qualifications: The award is selected at Springfield High School’s annual Celebration of the Arts and is given to the creator of a piece that celebrates diversity in the community.

Casey A. Feldman Memorial Scholarship-$1,500
To honor the memory of , a 2006 graduate of Springfield High School who was a standout actress and leader in the Springfield Theatre Workshop, editor-in-chief of the Scrivener Yearbook, editor-in-chief of the Spri-Hian school newspaper, a member of Springfield Singers, and the anchor of the Broadcast Journalism class.  She attended Fordham University in New York City for three years where she was majoring in Communication and Media Studies. Qualifications: graduating senior who exhibits many of the qualities that Casey did: a superior work ethic, compassion for the world around him/her, caring, helpful and supportive of others in need, honest, altruistic, loyal, and shows high integrity, maintains a diverse group of friends, and if possible, but not required, an interest in theater or journalism.
 
Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union The Partners in Learning Award-$300
Awarded to a student who is a member of , pursuing business studies in a post-secondary institution and exhibits above average academic achievement and service to school and/or community. This award is offered to seniors attending high schools in FMFCU’s field of membership.

Christopher Galvin Guidance Award-$1,000
To honor the memory of Christopher Galvin. Qualifications: an “average” student with a B+ average who has good attendance, a positive attitude, no disciplinary record and is well liked by peers and faculty.
 
Thomas A. Gartside Memorial Scholarship - $2,000 (two students; $1,000 each)
To honor the memory of Thomas Gartside who served as a teacher, guidance counselor and assistant principal at SHS; he passed away on March 22, 2003. Qualifications: to recognize a senior who has been accepted to a four year school as an education major; the student must have expressed a desire to teach at any level and demonstrated their interest in a way that indicates future success in the field, including, but not limited to volunteer work, tutoring or class presentations.  Financial need should be considered but is secondary to students’ likelihood for success in the field of education.
 
Keith E. Janusziewicz Memorial Award - $1,000
To honor the memory of Keith Janusziewicz who graduated from SHS in 1994; he passed away on September 21, 2011. Qualifications: To recognize a senior who is active in SHS (sports, music, arts and/or community) and is pursuing post-secondary education at a two or four year school.  Student must be accepted at a two or four year school, submit an essay describing personal goals, submit letters of recommendation from 2 faculty members and letters from two students.
 
The Johnson Family Scholarship - $2,000
To honor the memory of Mr. William Johnson who passed away in 1997 and his wife, Mrs. Frances Johnson who passed away in 2009. Qualifications: To recognize a student who has strong beliefs and is willing to stand up for those beliefs; top 25 percent of class; interested in pursuing engineering, math or science at a four year school; involved in school and community.
 
Earl Knorr Memorial Award - $400
To honor Earl Knorr who was the SHS principal for more than 20 years. Qualifications: Student pursuing a career in education and accepted as an education major at a four year school; a 500 word essay is required: “Why I want to enter the field of Education…”
 
McGlone/Zulli Memorial Scholarship - $5,000  (Commencement Award)
To honor the memory of James McGlone and Joseph Zulli, life-long residents of Springfield Community who also worked in the community. Proof of financial need and acceptance  to 4 year school.
 
Aurora Moral Memorial Scholarship- $300
To honor the memory of Aurora Moral, a Spanish teacher at Springfield High School for almost 30 years. Qualifications: A senior student who has developed a love of the Spanish language and all of its different cultures; the student must have studied the Spanish language for four academic years.
 
Regina O’Brien Memorial Award- $500
To honor the memory of Regina O’Brien. Qualifications: An average senior planning to attend a two or four year school; likelihood of success in school should be a consideration.

George Albert Pagano Scholarship - $2,000 (Commencement award)
To honor the memory of George Pagano. Qualifications: Academic achievement; accepted to a four year school; exemplifies concern for family, friends and community; conscientious fulfillment of obligations.
 
Rotary Club of Springfield, Two Year Trade, Business School Scholarship

Daniel D. Karpowich, Rotary Memorial Scholarship – Amount - TBA
Qualifications: Pursuing education at a 2 year, trade or business school with the intent of seeking employment subsequent to completion of the courses; attendance, achievement and general attitude toward education are a consideration in this scholarship.

Dr. Brian A. Wall, Rotary  Memorial Scholarship – Amount - TBA
Qualifications: Pursuing education at a 2 year, trade or business school with the intent of seeking employment subsequent to completion of the courses; attendance, achievement and general attitude toward education are a consideration in this scholarship.
 
Florence D. Scioscia Memorial Award - $15,000 (Commencement award)
To honor the memory of Florence Scioscia who was a teacher in the Springfield School District from 1963 to 1983. Qualifications: Academic achievement; respected by both faculty and peers; accepted to a four year school.
 
Springfield Ambulance Corps, William Myers Scholarship - $5,000
To honor the memory of William Myers who was a long time resident of Springfield Township; he served on the for over 25 years. Qualifications: Student must carry a 90 GPA at the time of the award and maintain a 3.0 or better throughout college. Student must be accepted to a 4 year school, studying in the field of medicine (pre-med, pharmacology, nursing or physical therapy); demonstrate involvement and leadership in the community, show commitment to teamwork (sports, music, etc.); submit an essay describing personal goals for their choice of a career in medicine (student should note if they have an interest in emergency medicine); submit letters of recommendation from two faculty members.
 
Springfield Education Association –$500
Qualifications:  80-90 average; pursuing a career in education and accepted as an education major.
 
SHS Alumni Association – “Pride of the Class”- $250 each, one boy; one girl
Qualifications: Recipients of this award must embody: a dedication to the and it’s programs; a commitment to learning; positive school spirit; service to school and community and trustworthy and respectful of others.
 
Stephen P. Stefani Memorial Award – $250
To honor the memory of Steve Stefani who was a teacher at SHS for 32 years; he was also a graduate of SHS. Qualifications: Student must demonstrate honesty and dependability; a positive attitude toward classmates and staff, as well as a sense of humor and school spirit; a willingness to serve by volunteering time to the school and/or the community.
 
"People Helping People" Scholarship- $500
Awarded to a senior seeking higher education; must demonstrate at least 40 hours of community service experience within the previous year, and submit an essay on how his or her community service experience has impacted his or her life.
 
John Gary Sulzer Memorial Scholarship - $500
To honor the memory of John Gary Sulzer who was a graduate of SHS and went on to earn a degree in Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering; he passed away at the age of 36. Qualifications: Pursuing a degree at a four year school; Criteria to be met in any one of the following qualifications:  1) attending the U. of Michigan, Sch. Of Naval Architecture Marine Engineering; 2) Attending any state Maritime College; 3) Attending any private university that teaches naval architecture of marine engineering; 4) Any eagle scout who chooses to enter a four year college or university; 5) Any needy student choosing a career in teaching.
 
Taylor Community Foundation Scholarship-$10,000
Awarded to selected individuals who are interested in pursuing an undergraduate degree in an allied health profession and who currently lives in the TCF Service Area. Ideally, TCF Scholars will return to directly improve the lives of other TCF Service Area residents.
 
The David J. Tourscher Memorial Award – Amount-$1,000
To honor the memory of David Tourscher who graduated from SHS in 2001 and was employed by the Department of Homeland Security; he passed away in March, 2007. Qualifications: Awarded to a student who has been accepted to a four year college or university (attach copy of acceptance letter) studying in the field of political science or criminal justice; demonstrates leadership and involvement in school and community; shows commitment to team or group process; submit an essay describing personal goals for choice of study (law enforcement, political science); recommendation from two faculty members.
 
Woman’s Club of Springfield - Academic Scholarship - $1,000 
Qualifications:  Must be in the top 20 percent of class his/her class; academic achievement, participation in school and community activities; acceptance to a four year college or university.
 
Trade, Tech, Business Scholarship - $300
Qualifications:  Pursuing education at a 2 year, trade/tech or business school; attendance, achievement and general attitude toward education are a consideration in this scholarship; letter of recommendation required.

Springfield Area Educational Foundation (SAEF) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational organization that supports Academics, the Arts and Athletics in Springfield Schools. In addition to scholarships, current priorities include: Celebration of the Arts; arts, music and theater programs; literacy initiatives; science and math programs; technology applications; athletic programs and facilities; and student leadership programs. Tax deductible gifts may be made to SAEF's general endowment fund to be used at the discretion of the Foundation’s Board to establish scholarships or support other initiatives of the Foundation. Donors may also specify a specific area of interest for an endowment.   

About the Springfield School District

Springfield is a high-performing public school district that serves the communities of Morton and Springfield. All Springfield schools have attained National Blue Ribbon status and have qualified for AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) for the past six years. As of last year, 100 percent of fourth graders, who have been with the district since kindergarten, were reading on grade level. 100 percent of Springfield High School graduates were accepted to a post secondary school of higher learning. In 2011, The Washington Post ranked Springfield High School as one of the top two high schools in Delaware County and one of the top 20 high schools in Pennsylvania.
