Cougars Coach Honored for Big Accomplishment

Springfield girls basketball coach Kim Smith is honored by the Springfield School Board for big and rare accomplishment.

The Springfield School Board honored Cougar girls basketball coach Kim Smith last week for achieving 300 victories.

Smith has been coaching the Cougars’ girls team for 19 years.  Over those years, her teams have averaged 15 wins a season, and they have advanced to the district playoffs every year.

“People say that high school coaching is a pretty thankless job,” Coach Smith said.  “But I consider it pretty thankful.”

Smith added, “It’s a real honor to get to 300 wins.  I’ve been pretty fortunate to have not just the kind of players I have on the court, but more importantly the kids they are off of it.”

Springfield Dr. Jim Capolupo thanked Coach Smith for her service with a hug, and he added that she should write a book.

“You should write a book about your life,” Dr. Capolupo said.  “It takes leadership to have the kind of documented success you’ve had on and off the court.”

Capolupo added, “I like to read about strong leaders, and I would read your book.”
