Springfield Fire Co. Helps Battle Huge Market Blaze

The weekend blaze effectively shut down half of one Delaware County borough.

The Springfield Fire Co. wass one of several from around Delaware County called in to help with a massive market fire in Darby Borough over the weekend. Springfield Co. 44 was called in to assist on both the day of the fire Saturday and to help with securing and clearing the fire scene on Sunday according to the company's fire log. The calls came at the end of an extremely busy week for the first responders of Company 44. Springfield Fire Co. Honors Phila. 'Brother'

The flag at station 44 flies at half staff in tribute to a fallen firefighter.

  The flag at Springfield Co. 44 on Saxer Ave. flew at half staff Monday in tribute to Philadelphia Fire Captain Michael Goodwin. NBC 10 reports that Goodwin died Saturday while combating a fire in South Philadelphia at the intersection of Fourth and Fitzwater streets. According to one Springfield firefighter who spoke with Patch Goodwin was a personal friend and mentor to several of the Springfield volunteer firefighters who also work full time for the Philadelphia Fire Department. Goodwin, 53, is the third Philadelphia firefighter to die on the job within the year. His funeral is scheduled for Thursday.

Sunday Fire in Springfield Involves 4 Depts.

Battalion Chief describes fire scene to Springfield Patch.

First you could hear the sirens then you could see the black smoke billowing briefly from the back of a house in the 800 block of West Rolling Road a little after 5 p.m. Sunday. One neighbor told Patch he thought someone was cooking on the grill until the smoke rising from the back of his nearby neighbor's house turned a heavy black. It didn't take long for first responders to race to the street and prevent the fire from spreading. Firefighters who arrived told the 9-1-1 dispatcher there was heavy smoke showing as the first engines from Springfield Fire Co. 44 rolled up to the house. Watch Fire Hazards During Holiday Season

Springfield Fire Department offers holiday safety tips.

Cheer and goodwill are certainly abundant during the holiday months, but the risk of fire—and its severity—also increase during the winter. The Springfield Township Fire Department shared fire prevention safety tips so residents can avert disaster this holiday season. Commissioners President Jeff Rudolph shared the tips at the Dec. 11 Board of Commissioners meeting. "During the winter months, fires are typically more severe than the rest of the year for several reasons..." Rudolph said. "Over the holidays, the risk of fire increases, partly due to extra power chords and decorations, which provide more fuel to the fire."
